providence, right in front of city hall. there has not been a soul in sight in the last four hours that i have been here. that's how abandoned it is. an emergency vehicle drove up to see if we were doing all right here. i spoke to the governor today. i was with the mayor, i was in the emergency command center tonight, chris. their real concern, they said we know we're going to have power outages. the issue is how many. if the snow doesn't get more dry, if it doesn't get colder, frankly, they're expecting many power outages. they say a prolonged storm is what they fear. not only afterwards do they have the plowing issue. they have the snow removal issue. one thing that makes this very different than 1978, the governor told me that technology today is so much better. i saw the gps they have on their plows now. the technology is so much better that they are able to prepare in advance, get those plows exactly where they need to be, get the cars off the roads in advance, that they're not going to have the same issues. you had 26 deaths here in 1978 during that blizzard. and here you go, anothe

compared to the great blizzard of 1978, if you can believe that. that is when the city is literally shutting down after a monster storm. what are we watching here. shoppers, gas station lines. folks who will be hitting the stores, hitting their neighborhoods trying to hunker down if they can for the weekend. right now it's a bad time to get around. more than 3,000 flights have already been canceled. that is for friday and saturday going into the weekend. we are watching boston as well. there are a lot of requirements, of course, to make sure that people are safe. as well as hospitals, getting around. and so they are requiring that all the vehicles get off the roads by 12:00 noon. we are also watching some real changes in the public transportation system. the public rail stopping at 3:30, we understand, this afternoon. there are already folks getting out there. you can imagine the officials. you can imagine the resources, the technology, the equipment that they are putting out onto the roads. 600 snow removers are out there already in place for this monster storm that is expected all

to be a huge relief when they get here. the city of mobile is also going to have medical personnel here available for them to perform any sort of quick examinations to provide them with medical assistance if anybody needs that when they get off the ship. you can bet -- it's not much to look at here, this is a small little facility that was built to handle cruise ships to facilitate people getting off the ships on to buses, on to whatever destination they have. but you can bet when they get here, this is going to look like paradise to those 31 passengers and the crew can't be in good shape either. >> i can only imagine, david. you know, hot shower goes a long way. but i imagine they also too want more compensation. is carnival saying, look, they're going to give them any money, anything else for this horrific ordeal they've been going through for four days? >> reporter: well, first of all, they're not going to have to pay for this trip, wow, yeah. and then after that, carnival is saying that they will provide them with a credit for another cruise should they decide they want to try this

siberian village is usually a quiet place. 1,000 people living just south of the city of chelyabinsk, but on friday morning, they were shocked by what they saw. an intense light followed by a trail of smoke across the sky. kindergarten worker says the 20 children ran to the windows when they saw the light, but she felt something was wrong and moved them away. she said she was still facing the windows when the meteor's shock wave hit. as the windows blew in, flying glass cut her face and hands. she said she didn't notice because she was worried about the children. most were safe, but terrified. but one was bleeding heavily. 3-year-old sasha suffered deep cuts to her head and face. her mother ran to the kindergarten after she heard the blast. i was shaking, she says. i grabbed her and started to calm her down. a lot of kids were crying, too. cassina was also in the room that morning. she wasn't hurt physically by the blast, but her mother says she's traumatized. she's been too afraid to stand next to windows and she keeps asking if the glass is going to break again. katerina says she u

of kansas, forced the closing of kansas city's airport. elsewhere, inches of ice, rivers of rain, and it ain't over yet. it's a monster. meteorologist tom sater joins us from the weather center. why is this different? >> i think because at one point, 20% of the country was under a watch or warning. in the midwest, where the snow is moving to chicago, indianapolis, a mix in chicago. some of the totals, sure, 9, 10, 12, 15 inches. to give you an idea, wichita, kansas, records go back to the 1 1880s. the worst snow, you just missed the all-time record. in northern arkansas to missouri, up to four inches of sleet and ice, now knocking out power, generators and oil lamps tonight. the triple threat. the other part is severe weather. look where the tornado watch is in effect. south of jackson. this includes hattiesburg, mississippi, and into the evening period. remember, it was going to be two weeks this coming sunday. an ef-4. i think what we'll see, dynamic start to lose strength for the severe weather overnight. great news. but as snow continues to make its way to the great lakes, here are a few
